Now that the dog days of summer are winding down, it is a great time to share this amazing Kitchen re-design that AFI recently completed. Alexandre’s amazing talent for space planning was necessary in this 1850’s Charleston Single House in Historic Downtown Charleston.
Our clients’ adorable dog Gertie was so gracious to let us into her space with open paws! Isn’t she sweet?

COMBINING THE BEAUTY OF THE PAST WITH THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE PRESENT
Alexandre needed to create a way for the kitchen area to become more functional for entertaining while maintaining the beauty of a Historic Charleston home. Our homeowner’s love of cooking was at the forefront of the design idea.
Gertie LOVES her new kitchen island that can seat 8 people comfortably, which means more scraps on the floor for her!
FLEX SPACE IN THE KITCHEN ANYONE?
We created 2 custom islands in maple butcher block that are moveable into numerous configurations to allow for versatility. Designed on casters, the islands are the perfect height for both food preparation and entertaining. The pop of color on the base of the islands by Sherwin Williams in Daisy SW 6910 fits Gertie’s sense of style and love of color! Alexandre also chose original artwork by local artist Kim Conger to brighten the space.

LET THERE BE LIGHT. . . AND DURABILITY
AFI created kitchen cabinets with a machine finish that is super glossy to reflect light, and shows no wear. The streamlined hardware from Foxworth Hardware keeps the look clean and simple. Gertie can move around freely in her space without causing any trouble!
INTEGRATING THE KITCHEN AND LAUNDRY AREA
A challenge for this space was to include the washer & dryer, a folding area and a spot for Gertie to call her own. The counter and built-in look of the appliances retain the clean lines of the kitchen, adding rather than distracting from the design. Gertie loves that she can be close to her family while they are entertaining and have the warmth of the dryer close by in the winter!
A KITCHEN FOR OENOPHILES
What is probably the most amazing fit to this space is the Wine Cooler from PLUGS that Alexandre was able to fit in seamlessly. Gertie is one happy pup since her mom’s love of imported wine has such a beautiful and accessible spot in the kitchen. We hope you enjoyed this project as much as we did! View more pictures here.
